Are Your Brake Pads Trying to Tell You to Take Action?

Are the brake pads on your car providing a musical accompaniment as you drive down the road? It's not unusual to hear a tiny bit of noise from those pads in certain circumstances, but if they emit a high-pitched screech when you apply the pedal, you need to pay more attention. What could be going on, and what should you do?

Everyday Use

In the modern-day car, manufacturers tend to fit friction pads that are relatively hard-wearing. They want to get as much mileage out of these pads as possible before you need to change them, but due to their consistency, they can often cause more abrasion. If you get dust and dirt trapped in between the pad and the brake disc, then you may well hear a noise as that dirt dissipates. Ordinarily, this is not something to worry about.

However, if it has been some time since those pads were changed, then they may be wearing down to such a point that action is required. To give you some advance warning, the brake pad makers will fit a tiny metal rod within the friction material that is designed to rub up against the brake disc when it is exposed.

Gradual Degradation

When the pad is newly fitted, the friction material will cover the warning rod, and all will be well. As time goes by, this material will degrade and, eventually, the tip of that metal piece will become exposed. When this happens, it will rub against the brake disc whenever you apply your foot to the pedal, and this will emit a high-pitched, squealing sound. You needn't worry about damage to the disc from this action, but you should make an appointment with your mechanic as soon as possible to have the brakes replaced.

Routine Service

If you do an average number of kilometres per year and always ensure that you take your vehicle in according to the service schedule, then you should not experience this issue. After all, the pads should last for the amount of time in between service visits, and the mechanic will change them routinely as part of their work.

Take Action Now

Of course, squealing brake pads may be annoying, but you should not delay any longer than you have to. After all, if the pads wear all the way down to the base, then you could damage the discs and callipers as well. Contact a local car service centre to learn more.
